2006 Swanmead School Proms
International Opera Singer joins Swanmead Proms
Miss Lorna Anderson, an international opera singer joined pupils and staff at Swanmead Community School on Monday 21st November for a 'Prom Concert' to conclude a focus week on patriotism.
The pupils were invited to bring flags, dress in red, white and blue, paint their faces and dye their hair in order for them to experience the feelings firsthand associated with belonging to a team, a school, a country.
Pupils joined in singing 'Land of Hope and Glory' and clapped to the 'Sailors Hornpipe' which traditionally gets faster and faster!. Emily Muntz, Jasz Blows-Paliwoda, Bryony Alcock and Maddie Barber all members of the South Somerset Youth Choir then sang 'Jerusalem' with Miss Anderson.
The concert concluded with Miss Anderson singing 'Rule Britannia' which left the Swanmead promenaders temporarily spell bound before they then joined in the choruses with much cheering and flag waving.
The music teacher, Mrs Hilary Martin, was really pleased with the event and said. "The Proms is so unique to this country that I wanted the children to have a feel for a piece of our culture". Miss Anderson also spoke to the children about how she started singing and encouraged them to use their music department to progress and enjoy the delights of performing.
