Year 6 pupils at Swanmead Community School in Ilminster, Isobel Thompson, Abi Abrahams and Lily Powell organised a School collection centre for the Blue Peter Shoe Biz Appeal, they collected well past their target of 100 pairs of shoes for the appeal. The shoes were collected to be sold abroad and the money raised will be used to set up 'Children's Corners' for very poor children in Malawi many of whom have lost their parents to diseases such as AIDS and have no one to look after them. The Children's Corners will provide somewhere for them to go for a few hours each day to be looked after by caring grown-ups, make friends, play games, and have something healthy to eat.
On Friday 1st December all pupils at the school were invited to pay £1.00 in support of a 'wear your wellies or non-uniform shoes to school day'. ₤185 was raised from this event which was split between the Blue Peter Shoebiz appeal and the Garden Project at Swanmead's Zambian link school, St Lukes in Msoro in order to further support the school's Going Global commitment.
