8 Feb 2007 - Silent Auction - Gibson Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar
13 year old Thomas Souster won a brand new Gibson Les Paul Studio electric guitar and fitted case for the school. Tom entered a Music for School draw when he purchased a CD in a local store.
Mr Birbeck, Headteacher said "When the guitar was unexpectedly delivered from the USA we were pleasantly surprised. It took us several days to work out what we had done to win. Tom has proved that you have to be in it to win it!. A number of Swanmead pupils are learning the guitar and have been excited to see such a special guitar in school. This Gibson model is one of the world's most famous guitars and is a favourite with professional guitarists who expect Les Paul performance."
As the guitar is so special, and is not appropriate for day-to-day use in a school context, the school have decided to sell the guitar through a Silent Auction. The money raised will be used to buy a number of cheaper electric guitars so more pupils can be encouraged to learn to play.
